At Vancouver Academy of Dance, our mission is to offer a multi-disciplinary approach to dance with classes tailored for people of all ages and skill levels. We’re renowned for producing versatile dancers who are comfortable with a variety of styles. We believe dancing is a phenomenal way for youngsters to express their creativity, enthusiasm and energy! BALLET

 

Develop proper alignment, posture, technical strength and grace. Ballet is the foundation of all dance forms. VAD offers Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society of Teachers of Dance ballet curriculums.

JAZZ

 

Jazz dance is accompanied by the popular music of today. This style of dance is energetic and high impact. Classes consist of the fundamental technical areas such as kicks, turns, jumps, footwork and flexibility.

CONTEMPORARY

 

Contemporary dance is an expressive dance style incorporated from various genres such as modern, ballet, jazz, and lyrical striving to connect the mind and body. Contemporary dance combines controlled legwork, floor work, improvisation, and the use of the torso. Students are introduced to a variety of contemporary dance techniques including: Cunningham, Horton, Graham and Limon.

LYRICAL

 

Lyrical dance is heavily influenced by ballet and jazz technique. The distinguishing feature of lyrical dance is that the dancers must emote or interpret the lyrics of the music with their movement and expression.

ACROBATICS

 

Acrobatics is a combination of gymnastics and dance technique. It is an excellent conditioning class where students will learn to develop their flexibility, tumbling and hand balancing skills. Acrobatic skills are an asset to all dance disciplines. Instructors are trained in Acrobatic Arts, Alixia Flexibility and TADA curriculums.

Chinese Dance

 

Chinese dance is a form of performing arts that involves rhythmic and body movements combined with music and costumes. It refers to a series of different dance genres that have evolved throughout the centuries. The movements of classical Chinese dance are rich in their ability to express a variety of feelings.

HIP HOP

 

Hip Hop dance refers to street dance which includes a wide range of styles including: locking, popping, waving and tutting. Hip Hop dance is performed to a variety of music styles; however rap, hip hop, funk, pop, and R&B tend to be the most common.

K-POP

 

K-Pop dance is inspired by the dance moves made famous in the music videos of Korea’s K-Pop stars like BTS, BLACKPINK, EXO, Twice, BtoB and PSY.

Our Richmond Divisions

General Division

VAD’s basic program emphasizes technique, artistic expression and the joy of dance. All students will perform in VAD’s Annual Year End Production held in May/June. At the discretion of the faculty, selected classes will have the opportunity to participate in one local dance competition.

Performance/Competitive Division

Students in the performance/competitive division will have the opportunity to perform, travel and compete in various events and competitions throughout the year. Entrance into this program is by invitation or audition only. Students are required to attend all scheduled performances and competitions (approximately 2-5 competitions every school year).

Examination Division

Entrance into this program is by director/instructor’s approval only. Students work towards taking their examinations and are permitted for examination entry at the discretion of the director/instructor. Vancouver Academy of Dance is recognized as an Approved Centre for the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD), Imperial Society Teachers of Dance (ISTD) and Acrobatic Arts (AAC) curriculums. Students who successfully pass their graded examinations and reach a certain level of study will be eligible to receive Fine Arts Credits towards their Secondary School graduation, as recognized by the B.C. Ministry of Education. Students will also perform in VAD’s Annual Year End Shows held in June. At the discretion of the faculty, selected classes will have the opportunity to participate in dance competitions.
